Een self-made workshop

In this local workshop on Nusa Penida we’ve tasted the best virgin coconut oil

When traveling, there’s a great chance you’ll experience the most beautiful things. That proved again when Talita experienced how virgin coconut oil was made during her stay in an Airbnb house on Nusa Penida (Indonesia).

Words & photography by Talita Kalloe

Coconut oil can be used for anything. In your food, in your hair, on your skin. I love it! And currently you can find it almost everywhere in many variations: “pure coconut oil”, “extra virgin coconut oil” (that part isn’t actually correct, because only olive oil can be extra virgin) or “virgin coconut oil”. If you want to go for the most pure and healthy alternative, then you should go for the virgin, cold-pressed, organic version, deodorized and preferably in a glass jar. This coconut oil is unprocessed, completely pure and only made with the best coconuts out there. I use coconut oil for a few years now and on our trip to Bali I suddenly had a chance for myself to see how it was made. How cool is that! And let’s be honest: as virgin as I tasted it here, I’ve not tasted it before.

Virgin coconut oil at Nusa Penida

Through Airbnb, we came across a lovely stay at Nusa Penida. This island is situated just beneath Bali and is known for experiencing the real Bali (before it was swallowed by mass tourism). During our stay we met Abraham (25) – an ambitious and exceptional young man who started a local company in producing cold-pressed virgin coconut oil. After many beautiful and special conversations with Abraham during our stay, we had the honor to take a look at his self-made workshop in a back house of the property. This is the place where he – and his team – makes coconut oil by hand with a lot of love and care!

A self-made workshop

When we arrived at his workshop, I could not believe that Abraham began with zero experience when he started his business. His workshop was spotless, professionally decorated and he kept full schedules to monitor the progress of the coconut oil processes. Abraham told us step by step how he makes the oil. With two small devices coconuts are first shredded piece by piece. Thereafter, the coconut is pressed by hand so the fluids can come out. Then, the fluid is purified and filtered. For this, Abraham himself build a filter with PVC-pipes and tubes. The most pure and clean form of coconut oil is dripping out now. A very intensive process that requires a lot of patience. Abraham and his team had worn up a lot of coconuts while testing the process before it actually worked. But well, as they say: no progress without struggle. And the result is stunning. Abraham adds no additives to the oil and retains the original mild smell and all important healthy substances from the oil.

Coconut oil with a soul

In the meantime Abraham has received an official certificate from the government so he can bring his coconut oil to the market. But that will take a while. Until then he sells the oil only locally at Nusa Penida and Bali. I think it’s so nice to meet people who are so passionate about what they do – preferably on the eve of their success. Therefore I could not help it but to purchase some jars off virgin coconut oil from Abraham to show him some support. Abraham is currently working hard to set up a website and the product now has a name as well: Narikela – which means “coconut”, translated from Sanskrit. We wish Abraham all the best with his amazing product!
